9 Subtitle Download Websites: Current Options & Updates

Looking for subtitle download websites? For an existing movie or TV episode, start with a subtitle catalogue and match the language and release. For an online video with captions, a URL-based downloader serves a different purpose. If your own video has no subtitles, generate a new file from its speech.

This guide revisits the nine names in our original list. It separates current catalogue options from unavailable, changed or unverified entries, rather than presenting all nine as equally usable recommendations.

For a quick starting point, compare Addic7ed and Subdl for episode or film subtitles, or Moviesubtitles.org for movie browsing. OpenSubtitles is another catalogue to check when its site is accessible. DownSub is the URL-based option in this list. None of these choices guarantees that the exact subtitle you need exists.

The nine subtitle download websites, reviewed

1. OpenSubtitles: movie and TV subtitle search

OpenSubtitles provides a subtitle database. Its official application documentation describes searches by movie or show name, IMDb ID, season and episode, with language selection. Use the correct title and release details, then review the file information before downloading. Our homepage browser check encountered a security verification screen; we did not bypass it or verify a download. Check current account requirements on the service itself rather than assuming unlimited anonymous access.

2. Subscene: a historical entry, not a current recommendation

The original Subscene service closed in May 2024. Contemporary discussion by administrators on the OpenSubtitles forum records the closure and attempts to import contributions. Our earlier description of occasional downtime was misleading. If you are searching for a Subscene alternative, look up the title and language in another catalogue such as Addic7ed, Subdl or OpenSubtitles; do not assume every old contribution was transferred.

3. Addic7ed: detailed TV episode versions

Addic7ed lists television episodes and movies with languages, contributors and release/version labels. Its pages also distinguish completed translations from work in progress. That makes the episode number and version information worth checking before selecting a file. The homepage describes registration benefits, including a higher download allowance; check the current terms instead of treating access as unlimited. We link to its public homepage, not directly to the login form.

4. Podnapisi: useful release metadata, live access unconfirmed

Podnapisi's indexed catalogue shows movie and series subtitles with language, FPS, release names, ratings and upload information. These fields can help distinguish files for different editions. However, the live address failed to resolve in our browser during this review. That is an access result from our environment, not proof of a permanent closure. Check whether it opens for you; if not, use another catalogue rather than following an unverified mirror.

5. YIFY Subtitles: the previous link was not a verified download destination

The earlier article linked this heading to a YTS user profile path. That did not establish a reliable subtitle catalogue destination, so the link has been removed. We have not verified a replacement YIFY subtitle domain and are not endorsing a lookalike. For a subtitle that mentions a particular release, search the movie title in another catalogue and compare the complete release information, not just a familiar group name.

6. Subdl: multilingual movie and TV subtitles

Subdl offers a movie and TV subtitle catalogue alongside related products. Start with the title, then compare the language and release attached to individual subtitle entries. Its public product information also separates optional services: for example, its AI subtitle translator is advertised with a paid plan. A searchable catalogue, a player integration and an AI translation service are different features; choose the one that fits the task instead of assuming every feature has the same access conditions.

7. Moviesubtitles.org: movie-focused browsing

Moviesubtitles.org has movie, new and popular subtitle listing sections. Use it as a movie-focused browsing option, checking the film year, language and release details for the selected result. Its homepage also links separately to a TV subtitle site. We have not tested a downloaded file or verified the accuracy of every listing; a familiar title alone does not mean a subtitle matches your video.

8. English-Subtitles.org: no longer a relevant destination in this check

There were two problems with this entry: the earlier article linked to an unrelated news page, and the domain named in the heading now displayed Vietnamese football content in our browser check. Neither is a suitable destination for readers looking for English subtitle files. We have removed the unrelated outbound link. Use an English-language filter on another subtitle catalogue rather than assuming this old domain still provides its former service.

9. DownSub: extract captions from an online video link

DownSub describes a paste-link workflow for supported video sites, including YouTube, Viki, Viu and WeTV. Its homepage lists SRT, VTT and TXT: paste the URL, request extraction, then select an available language and format. This is a caption-extraction route, distinct from searching a movie catalogue or generating fresh subtitles from speech. If the required caption track is unavailable, check the source video or use a generation workflow for media you can process.

How to choose a subtitle file that matches your video

1. Match the title and year. For television, include the season and episode; a full-season archive and a single episode file are different downloads.
2. Choose the language and caption type. Check whether the file contains translated dialogue, original-language subtitles, or accessibility cues such as speaker names and meaningful sounds.
3. Compare the release. Runtime, opening logos, recaps and different cuts can change timing. A WEB release and a disc edition may not use the same timeline.
4. Read the available file details. Version notes, FPS, completion and user feedback help identify a likely match, but they are not guarantees of correctness.
5. Test several points. Check the beginning, middle and end against the spoken dialogue before settling on the file.

Use subtitles and media you have permission to access and process. Check the source's usage terms before republishing or distributing a file. An AI workflow does not itself grant rights to the source material.

SRT, VTT, ASS and SUB: choose and load the right format

SRT is a text-based subtitle format: numbered blocks pair text with start and end times. It does not contain the video. VTT is another timed-text format used for web playback. ASS can carry styling. Not every subtitle file is plain text: VobSub uses image-based SUB data with an IDX index. Choose a format your destination supports.

Choose the subtitle language.

In VLC desktop for Windows or Linux, open the video and use Subtitle → Add Subtitle File, then choose the file. The official VLC menu guide documents subtitle loading and synchronization controls. A matching video/subtitle filename in the same folder can also help automatic detection.

• Constant delay: if every line is early or late by the same amount, adjust the subtitle delay or edit cue timing.
• Increasing drift: compare runtime, release and FPS; one fixed offset may not solve a different cut.
• Unreadable characters: check the file's encoding and the player's font/language support. Save an edited text subtitle in UTF-8 when appropriate.
• Unexpected download: a ZIP archive may contain ordinary subtitle files, but an installer is not required just to load an SRT. Inspect the contents and do not run unrelated executables.

For reusable changes, open the file in a subtitle editor; use a subtitle translator when the text needs another language. Renaming a TXT file to SRT does not create timestamps.
